with latest updates installed, or Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 alpha 3?

Since the beginning of October 2009, not too sure which day, my sound
has not been working correctly. Both 32bit Jaunty and AMD64bit Karmic
are affected (kernel update?) .
It manifests inself by not allowing dvds and music cds to be played. VLC
player does not work. Movie Player does not work. I h
