I have solved the issue by removing the CDROM mounting from the /etc/fstab
(device /dev/sdc was mounted as a CDROM).
Ubuntu should not have an CDROM entry in the /etc/fstab if laptop does not have
CDROM at all!

Surprise... surprise!
When I tried to plug the same external harddrive, on the same laptop but using
Ubuntu LiveCD (on a USB) it worked without any problem at all. From what I can
see, the gnome-mount is exactly the same version!
