I followed your suggestion. From a terminal window session (Gnome was not able start), I did: sudo apt-get remove rarian-compat #just in case sudo apt-get install scrollkeeper update-manager -d sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install rarian-compat Seems to have worked. As an ex

I confirm that rarian-compat fails to get installed during the upgrade process. However, by removing rarian-compat package and installing scrollkeeper instead (the seem to be interchangeable) I was able to finish the upgrade process and get the working installation if Intrepid.
