I managed to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 Beta (2.6.27-7-generic,
ALSA 1.0.17.dfsg-2ubuntu1) and the issue is now gone.
So, it is probably appropriate to mark this as resolved in 1.0.17.dfsg-
2ubuntu1. I would do so myself, but I assume since I'm not the owner of
this branch I can't do that.
