that's bug easy to workaround in a IRC client so a stopper bug, there
will not be an intrepid update for this one

gnome/+bug/288468/comments/3) was able to track where the 'transparency
background' setting sits. I just confirmed it works as a workaround.
Use gconf-editor, browse to apps/xchat/main-window, and change the
'background_type' key from 2
I'm getting the same thing. I have no idea if it's transparency related
in my case, but it could well be. The entry does not appear to exist in
~/.xchat2/xchat.conf, and since the app can't start, I have no way of
checking...
