Connecting to a Samba share running on a Ubuntu server is solved this
way

For a Ubuntu client its still a mess for me... "Mission impossible" to
connect .

Nope... with all respect.
Take it to Mr Langasek himself if possible.
This was also discussed during Hardys development.
If you study all URL or test yourself "the mess" is clear.
Start with a shares-admin from a terminal... :) undocumented.
hostname is maybe NM0.7 or nautilus-smb and so o
"Impossible to sort this out with package bugs."
Still it would be easier to handle these problems if you file a bug for
each individual problem.

nfs-common must be installed..."known issue" from 8.04.
