I gave up trying to figure out this issue. I reinstalled Ubuntu.
Everything seems to work fine now.

how do I do that? I did the following:
$ gdb `which gedit`
(gdb) run
This just told me about threads starting. How can I get the stacktrace while
it's hanging?
