It's a matter of having fglrx installed. That's what causes this, fglrx
provides it's own libdri that's an older ABI.

But why is this a duplicate of #247376 ?
To me this seems to be a wrong version of x11-common installed. I don't
see fglrx errors in the X logs, only libdri version problems.. But maybe
I'm wrong..

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 a month ago, and one week ago I used 'update-
manager -d' to get the alpha.

I cannot try fglrx : he cannot find the driver (the packet couldn't be
installed because missing some packets). With the vesa driver the
screens come but with the wrong resolution (no 1440x900 yet, ok).
I try purge but nothing changed.

I have exactly the same problem,
I also tried the fglrx and vesa drivers and it does the same.
So perhaps it doesn't concern xserver-xorg-video-ati but a more generic
package.
I've a ATI X600.
