Oh, it seems nautilus is trying to use imdb-thumbnailer to create the
thumbnails. I did install it some time ago on Hardy, so that's probably
the problem. It's not installed on Intrepid.
Only mimetypes assigned to imdb-thumbnailer seem to be having this
problem.

could you run gconf-editor, go to desktop, gnome, thumbnailer and look
at the command used for the mimetype of the videos you are trying to
thumbnail? do you have any error if you run this command? what mimetype
is displayed in nautilus for those videos?
