I did a mv ~/.local ~/.local-old and logged out and back in, and the
places bar works correctly now. So it's definitely something being
changed in ~/.local
After switching the directory back and relogging in, I noticed that:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/.local/share/applications$ more mimeapps.list

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 beta and discovered my Places menu
folder entries (Home Folder, Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos) all
open with Rythymbox instead of Nautilus with the pathname as the only argument.
There's definitely something going on here...
