I can confirm the latest update fixed the tapping, however the speed is
unusably slow, is this the same underlying issue or does this need
logging as a new bug?

Tapping works for me as well from the latest synaptics update. But the
scrolling area on the touch is still a bit slim than usually was.

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 8.10 on i386.
I am using a Acer Aspire 4315 laptop and touchpad tap does not work any more.
