This is fixed in the latest version of update-manager that is now in the
archive. It will warn about the driver and remove it (replace it with
the free "nv" one).

I'm also having this problem -- some sort of indication would have been
nice. Is there a way of downgrading the xserver to make the driver
compatible? I'm assuming that otherwise we'll have to wait for nvidia to
release appropriate drivers.
