Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu

This problem should be resolved by using the version of pidgin included
in the hardy-backports repository (Pidgin 2.4.3), as it sounds like the
issue fixed upstream here http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/5693
