I just wanted to add that doing what Guillaume Desmottes said works,
although its a bit tedious to click every single contact and right
click-edit-groups (drag and drop doesn't work, is this a separate
issue?/should I add it as wishlist?).

You can add your gmail contacts to any group using: right click -> Edit
-> Groups.
Does that work if you manually add them?
