I talked to Gnome devs and it appears that evolution-data-server is not
really a part of Evolution, but rather a part of Gnome itself, but it
carries a somewhat obsolete and inaccurate name. It should probably be
called 'gnome-data-server', and yes, Gnome absolutely needs it.

note that you can uninstall evolution, evolution-data-server is only a
set of libraries used in different applications, the name might be
confusing but there is no real reason why an user would need to
uninstall those

it's not possible to have a GNOME 100% free of Evolution since a lot of
applications had good features depending on it, like the gnome-about-me
part of the gnome-control-center package which saves the user
information through evolution data server and the same goes for the
gnome-panel which interac
