I talked to Gnome devs and it appears that evolution-data-server is not really a part of Evolution, but rather a part of Gnome itself, but it carries a somewhat obsolete and inaccurate name. It should probably be called 'gnome-data-server', and yes, Gnome absolutely needs it. ** Changed in: evolut

it's not possible to have a GNOME 100% free of Evolution since a lot of applications had good features depending on it, like the gnome-about-me part of the gnome-control-center package which saves the user information through evolution data server and the same goes for the gnome-panel which interac
