As I wrote in duplicate bug #256849, I think one solution would be for
gnome-session to ship a desktop file for its gnome-wm command, and then
use "gnome-wm" in the gconf keys. This would make it work like in Hardy,
where gnome-wm was default. The main thing that changed is the use of a
desktop fil

Changing status back to confirmed though. "Fix Committed" is not to be

Mehdi - Thanks, but the window manager is now stored in
"/desktop/gnome/session/required-components/windowmanager". In addition
to this, gnome-appearance-properties also needs to set the window
manager in "/desktop/gnome/session/default-session", which is a list.

gnome-session use now gnome-wm has default window manager not directly metacity
gnome-wm get the window manager in gconf key
/app/gnome-session/gnome-wm/window_manager
gnome-appareance capplet use /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default
gconf key and it's obsolete
