you get this error when you havent restarted ffox properly ... log out
of system to be sure of that.

Please ignore my last, I had a Firefox instance languishing in the
background. All ok now. Profile manager wasn't required.

I got this error after applying todays upgrades (18-Dec-2008). However,
if I attempt to follow the advice given by starting from the terminal
with "firefox -ProfileManager" I don't get the profile manager. Firefox
just starts as it normally would, with the "Assertion Failed" box
floating on top. OS
I followed the advice and restarted my computer. Then the error
disappered.

I'm having the same problem after the last update.
The error also occurs when executing with option -ProfileManager or
option -safe-mode. It also occurs if the entire .mozilla directory is
removed.
