Btw. Radeon HD 4870 has the exact same problem. No matter wether using
8.6 nor 8.8. nor none of them.

Well, reading that mentioned post at phoronix again and again, where does this
limitation come from?
Is it caused by ther kernel or do I missunderstand it .. plx
If it's not harware limitation, then it is in fact a bug. Maybe a
limitation from ages where grpahics cards had 4kb of VRAM...

I'm having the exact same problem with my Radeon HD 3650. Only 256MB of
the 512MB are detected according to Xorg.0.log. Apparently other linux
users have the problem too - here's a Phoronix thread that talks about
possible work around:

It's independent of fglrx.
Running inteprid without any tweaking, I get the very same log message, just
with RADEON instead of FGLRX
so it actually is a xorg bug

I can confirm this. Using hardy amd64 with fglrx 8.6. lscpi does not
detect it correct, too. I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 with 512 MB
GDDR3.
