This problem is related to vsync on intel cards. Boxee has the same problem.
You can turn it off unchecking menu/Options/Limit Frame Rate.
The same can be done in gconf-editor turning off /apps/celestia/videoSync.

I am having the same problem with an Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS, 910GML. It
does the same thing when running Google Earth, despite the fact that my
computer can run it fine in Windows XP. Also, all the features of
compiz work great as far as I can tell and turning it off does not help.

I can confirm this problem here, same video card, same problem. I'd also
mention that there are some weird artifacts on the screen, notably when
rendering the earth.

Thanks for the reply. I do have direct rendering working:

I have tried it with and without Compiz, but it's slow either way. I'm not
using the Switch User feature (but that's interesting, I didn't know that).

Please could you confirm if direct rendering is working on your display
(glxinfo | grep rendering). If you are using the "Switch User" feature,
direct rendering only works for the first user to log in. If direct
rendering is not working, the Xorg.log file for your display may contain
some clues a
