I could not reproduce this in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Same problem for me, i use Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10). Need to modify the
init script with the correct path.

Same here too -- oddly enough, that did not always prevent zabbix-agent from
running. On one machine I manually did a
cd /var/run
sudo mv zabbix-server zabbix-agent
and started zabbix-agent. On another machine that seems to have happened by
itself.

zabbix-agent init script er
Same here.. and it appears some of the postinst/postrm for zabbix-agent
packages relies on /var/run/zabbix-server as well.
Issues:
debian/zabbix-agent.init:DIR=/var/run/zabbix-server
debian/zabbix-agent.postinst:--home /var/run/zabbix-server/
--no-create-home \
