Just upgraded my box to 8.10- absolutely the same problem.
I connected zyxel modem to com port and I see that it's data lamp blinks when I
type something in minicom or gtkterm, or it blinks more on command with
response, but I get nothing from modem!

btw, we found that minicom (or, more correctly, ubuntu 8.04) receives
data from serial port, but sends nothing- I mean we can see router bouut
messages, but our input is ignored...

btw, this problem is not minicom specific.
the same problem with any application which use serial port for terminal access.
