Im using 2.6.27-generic and did a update-manager -d (however aborted
directly because packages could not be retrieved) now the sound is gone.
I just started the computer and wanted to listen to some radio, now it
killed the radio and the time.

I've installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex recently (from livecd). Sound worked
fine for me. I upgraded to latest version of all packages, and it
stopped working.
I've tried killing the pulseaudio process, disabling it also at session
management (as explained above), restarted machine

So, I performed the instructions at

i386 arch and I still have no sound. The necessary attachments are
below. I am going to try to kill the pulse audio process all together.
Here is a link to my audio hardware information and
Bug 245946 deals ONLY with dist-upgrade to 8.10 where system sound can
be heard, but no others. If you have different symptoms, please do not
post them to this bug report. Instead, if the steps below do not resolve

I'm not clear why, but PulseAudio is still starting. I have two
accounts on the computer, and had to go into each one to disable
pulseaudio in the Sessions dialog box, but after installing some updates
this morning it was running. I verified that the checkbox was still
empty, and killed the Pulse
After a dist-upgrade, simply clicking a WAV file caused X to crash.
Sound was also dropping as indicated above. However, I also experienced
sound loss from a fresh installation of Intrepid Ibex. Might suggest
modifying the summary to remove the "after dist-upgrade" clause. The

Install kernel 2.6.27-generic to continue using sound, it worked for me.
I don't know why for i386 there is kernel 2.6.25 and for others 2.6.27.

I had the same problem on my thinkpad. I was able to solve this just by
killing the pulse audio process using the System Monitor. I also
unchecked PulseAudio in the Preferences-->Sessions dialog box to make

experiencing the same problem here. no sound in vlc. not even the
faintest sound could be heard.
