Is there a specific reason why the same settings can also be configured
independently in the Nautilus preferences? Actually I never tried
disabling this in the Nautilus preferences before I read the above post.

In hardy, photo import is controlled by "System -> Preferences ->
Removable Media" (the gnome-volume-manager menu) instead of in the
nautilus preferences. Can you please check your settings there?
