bug reappeared after booting up system today.
also noticed (as i failed to mention first time around), somehow both the
nvidia restricted driver and compiz got disabled. re-enabling the driver and
compiz and rebooting did not have any effect in canceling the bug.

taking a screenshot of the desktop did not register the the anomaly.
however, tried just restarting X (ctrl-alt-bckspace) and that seemed to
cancel artifacts for the time being.

i ran the bug reporting tool from within synaptic so it listed it as being a
synaptic bug. disregard that. this bug has an unknown source to me.
i had also ran the Fix xserver option from recovery mode menu, and checked for
broken packages; all good. yet bug still remains.
