i have tried the modprobe. the uhci module was loaded then, but the mouse did
not work.
i cannot try an older kernel, because they are not installed anymore...
i took the chance to switch to ubuntu8 lts now and everything works
good...

this means that the uhci module is not loaded for some reason.
try running 'sudo modprobe uhci-hcd' to load the module into the kernel.
see if this fixes your issue. if it does, type 'sudo gedit /etc/modules' and
add a line with uhci-hcd
this will force the module to be loaded at boot time...

ok, both usb 1.1 (OHCI_HCD) and usb 2.0 (UHCI_HCD and EHCI_HCD) are configured
as modules (=m) in the kernel.
now, can you check if the modules are loaded into the kernel?
run 'lsmod | grep ohci' and 'lsmod | grep ehci' and 'lsmod | grep uhci' and
tell us the results?

Hello Dimitrios
i have tried the mouse in other systems even on a windows system on the
same computer. The mouse is working there with no problems.
I also tried other usb-mouses on my ubuntu with no success...

It is probable your mouse is USB 1.1 and the kernel you have installed only has
the USB 2.0 support enabled.
Can you send us the output of lsusb? (lsusb > lsusb.log)
Also the kernel version you're running? (uname -a > uname.log)
Just in case, can you try connecting the mouse to another computer,
