I can confirm that this is no longer an issue in 8.10 - you can leave
the device password on and it will not cause any problems, nor will it
show up as a device until you enter the password. I did not test the
2.6.27 kernel in 8.04.

That Ubuntu 8.10 is about to be released is very commendable, but will
benefit only a small share of Ubuntu 8.04 users, namely those who do not
care about the 'LTS' and are willing and able to upgrade all their hosts
(I wrote something to that effect before - do I have to do that for each
bug found
The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced -
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27
Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is
still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive
further feedback. Th

bradleee, you rock. -- taking off the device password solves the
bouncing device issue. Note, i had to restart the device after removing
the device password. device is currently charging!
I haven't tried to tether yet, but i'm guessing that will work just
fine.

This also happened to me on 8.04 with the Blackberry 8830. Whenever I
would connect the blackberry in mass storage mode, udev would munch cpu
like crazy and report lots of device adds and removes via network
manager in the syslog. This occurred with a device password enabled,

There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
same trouble here on hardy i386. udev hits 100% cpu and generates the
log messages above. i run dmesg and get the same output. killing udev
and restarting provides the same problems. the blackberry is an 8703e.

I am having the same problem. udevd goes nuts whenever I plug in my
blackberry. I am running Hardy amd64. As a note I installed a barry
deb, not sure if this caused the problem as I hadn't plugged in my
blackberry prior to installing it.

Well, if the existing output of udevmonitor doesn't contain enough
information, I can provide one of my machine. I interrupted the udevmon
process when the log file grew to 750MiB (yes, sevenhundredfifty
Megabyte) as here the udevd spins for hours after I plug in the
BlackBerry ...
