Hi,
I changed to Open Office 3 in 8.10 on my Aspire One as soon as it came up.
Also passe to other associates in Mac, Windows and 8.10
No major problems till now... it´s night and day!

I haven't had problems with File->Recent Documents not working except in
cases where the file really no longer exists or it was on a file share
that I don't currently have mapped on the system.

Yes, usually works well in document recovery.
But it is usual that when I click on File-> recent files, and the last document
I was working on, Ooo says that this does not exist, but it still on its folder
with the same name.

Do you still have this problem with openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2? I
opened an existing document modified it and killed OOo. Then restarted
OOo and it didn't claim the file did not exist. If you were editing a
file under /tmp when OOo crashed and it no longer existed when you tried
to restart OOo
