Strange but it works now. I don't know how but it is solved. I tried the
commands above and it didn't seem to work. I removed and add the trash
icon on the panel, I rebooted and now it is working. Happy camper again
:-)

nothing is printed on the command line when you try to open the trash in
nautilus then? could you try to stop gvfsd-trash before starting a new
one?

I have the exact same problem. When I try to run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r nothing
happens and /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash gives: "Added new job source 0x8075808
(GVfsBackendTrash)
Queued new job 0x8076820 (GVfsJobMount)
send_reply, failed: 0
register_mount_callback, mount_reply: (nil), error: 0x80738
could you run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r on a command line, and start
running /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash then and note what is printed when
running the commands and when trying to use gvfs-ls or nautilus?

No, gvfsd-trash is not running, and the command you gave comes back as
beng invalid, even after I instaled the required package.
~$ gvfs-ls trash:
Error: Operation not supported
~$
I can access and manipulate the folder using Thunar, though...
