My laptop does not have any buttons to turn off the wireless. I did NOT
set up NDISwrapper, so I assume it is using the restricted Broadcom
driver.

I don't know how to turn off the wireless. Through gnome's network
manager applet?
I can hibernate with no problems, but shutting down is a no-go.
