I noticed that the MimeType of xcf files is correctly detected by nautilus, however, file detects application/octet-stream (which is a synonym of unknown) instead of image/x-xcf. GNOME use MimeTypes to identify files and GIMP registers the image/x-xcf MimeType in his desktop file in /usr/share/appl

I think this is a gnome bug and not a GIMP bug. The reason I say this is because of the error message "Could not find a suitable application". So Gimp has not started at all yet, because gnome doesn't know what to do with the file. Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect. -- cannot
