I can confirm this default setting on baobab 2.20.0.1.
IMHO having his remote shares scanned is not the default behaviour the
end-user expect to get, as baobab is mostly used to know which directory
to delete in order to save space in his /home partition.

You can uncheck .gvfs partition in Preferences menu. This will avoid baobab
scanning it. If you need to scan remote volumes, you can use the Remote connect
dialog.
