Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to

Switching to VT and back to X11 fixes the bug.
It doesn't lock or crash the machine.

As I understand it, there is no crash. It sounded as if switching to a
VT and back to X11 restored the video, but Jeff has ignored my questions
to confirm this.
