I think I got to the bottom of this.
consolekit was somehow playing a trick on me.
The ck-list-sessions command provides the list of sessions. For some reason,
none of my sessions had "active = TRUE" - they were all "active = FALSE". I
also believe that the x11-display-device was not returning th
