I use Hardy (upgraded from Gutsy and Feisty on regular procedure apt-get
dist-upgrade and after trying unsuccesfully to backup sys with
Remastersys, laptop reboot and give me same error message, but keyboard
works...(Acer Aspire 5310)

this bug appears after update from 8.04 to 8.10. this is the error and
the output requested. hope someone has a fix for this:

reassigning the bug to xorg then, GNOME doesn't write the xorg
configuration

I've changed the uk parameter in xorg.conf and it was then OK. However,
it was the Ubuntu Hardy install that set it to uk in xorg.conf

what is the keyboard layout you want to use? the xorg configuration
lists an uk one which seems to be incorrect and create the issue there
