I gave, changed gutsy->hardy in /etc/apt/sources.list and sudo apt-get
update && apt-get upgrade and everything went smoothly...

release does not contain any reference to hardy.

The output of the file looks good - so you don't see a upgrade button
even with the latest update-manager from gutsy-updates? Is there any
output when you run "update-manager" on a terminal window? Does the file
/home/egon/.update-manager-core/meta-release contain a reference to
hardy?

I also have no upgrade option. I've been running the vanilla gutsy 7.10
on my IBM thinkpad T42. I have not modified the package manager in any
way. The update manager simply says everything is up-to-date.
