a fix for it, we still don't really know why it happened.

Here's the situation.
I completed the 8.04 upgrade. It rebooted. I logged in.
zsh, my normal shell, was hanging.
So, I used Alt-F2 to launch a bash in a command window.
I got the messages I reported.
I rebooted.
zsh got better, and so did the man command. I can even launch it from alt-f2
