The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

I've run into the same problem with my Microstar laptop. Luckily my
laptop's internal wireless card (RaLink) seems to be working under 8.04,
although I prefer to use wired internet when possible. I may end up
punting back to 7.10 for the time being if there isn't a work-around for
this.

same problem for me
It was working in 7.10, stopped after upgrade, and doesn't work in 8.04 too.
dmesg says :
[ 2451.915147] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready
[ 2542.666842] eth1: link down
the card was recognized natively before 7.10
