I believe this bug is resolved in 9.04 and above. Ryan, I think you're
describing a different bug (bug #357673) than that of the original
submitter.
If anyone is still seeing the original problem as described on a
ThinkPad z61t with Ubuntu 9.04 or later, please feel free to reopen this
bug report
This is still an issue with 9.04 on my thinkpad G41. I had to:
echo 0x00ff > /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey
...to get the mute/volume up/volume down keys to work.

Is this still an issue with Ubuntu 9.04 or later? Note that the
handling of thinkpad volume hotkeys has been deliberately changed in
this release (bug #357673).

The volume up, down, and mute keys work great on my z61t, since
upgrading to 8.10. However, I think I'm seeing the same volume event,
as jharker, with the mute button. The button seems to raise the volume
one notch, before muting. The button has a keyboard shortcut of
XF86AudioMute. Thanks.

I've upgraded to the latest Ubuntu (8.10) on my Thinkpad G41, and the up
and down volume buttons now trigger XF86AudioRaiseVolume and LowerVolume
respectively. So that works. However, the mute button seems to ALSO
trigger the XF86RaiseVolume event, rather than some sort of mute event
as it should
Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to
this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find
out what additional work should be done on this bug.

I can also confirm this bug on a Thinkpad G41. Volume controls worked
fine under Gutsy with thinkpad-keys, but stopped under Hardy. This is a
definite regression.
I tried all methods listed in the wiki and got absolutely no response
from the volume buttons.
