With Hardy I haven't had any sound problem since using the fix I
commented on above.
As to Intrepid I tested the live-cd for Intrepid alpha4 and the sound
worked fine so I'll asume there were no snd-hda-intel unknown symbols.

By default, the alsa modules are installed without any options.
Unfortunately, the intel-hda drivers now require options to specify
which hardware versions to support, and ubuntu doesn't specify any of
those options when compiling the alsa modules. Here's a way to f

Looking at Bug #211644 I didn't see any see any mention of "unknown
symbols" until you entered the fray. I don't know enough to say if its
the same bug.
Did you have any luck with the -rt kernel?
