regarding this being due to hardware error. For future reference you can
manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in
the yell

Of course no tab for battery mode in gnome-power-manager and the symbol
in panel always shows the ac symbol.

This bug report was marked as Triaged a while ago but has not had any
updated comments for quite some time. Please let us know if this issue
remains in the current Ubuntu release,

On my account it must have been a hardware/bios error. Windows on the same
machine behaves just as bad if not worse. For the moment I have to run with the
battery disconnected all together to get the machine working as it should.
I would close this issue with "wont fix" or similar.

You may want to try the latest pre-release of Jaunty (currently Alpha3)
- http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . It contains a 2.6.28

I just installed Fedora 10, which uses kernel 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 and
it also can't find my battery. So it's either a kernel issue or a real
hardware one :(

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
