I was in Mozilla firefox typing in a google request. I doubt that this means
much.
I have Intrepid x86_64 and Heron x86_64. Heron is ok, Intrepid is not.
Perhaps the following will help.

I am seeing a whitescreen on Hardy with 2.6.24-19-generic (linux-kernel
package version 2.6.24-19.34). Inspecting /var/log/messages shows
message like this:
Jun 26 06:17:40 host kernel: [ 1376.955900] compiz.real[6597]: segfault

Reverting to 2.6.24-1
Nope, I was trying to repeat the same sequence, and sometimes I've
managed to reproduce it, but since the update the bug is not
reproducible anymore - at least for me.

Thanks, of course I have no idea what the Gnome fail safe mode is.
I have been disatisfied with Windows for many years now, it is often buggy
and just really top heavy. I am really impressed with how Linux keeps
improving. For instance, Ubuntu 8.04 Beta is much better at reading my NTFS

Hi
Compiz is a set of programs used for managing the desktop and enabling the
special effects. You use the Synaptic package manager to uninstall and
install them(and all your other software). If you do not know where that is
you find it in desktop menu under System>Administration>Synaptic Packager
Thanks, I am an almost total Linux novice. I am running an ATI video card
and gather from your notes below that the crash is somehow related to
video. I have no idea what the compiz programs are or how to reinstall
them. I do find Ubuntu 8.04 more useful than 7.10, which was the first

Hello
I do not have the detailed information handy that you have but the crash I
had was also with compiz-real. It followed the update of the compiz programs

Hello,
I can confirm this bug with an NVidia 6800Go graphics card on Ubuntu
Hardy Heron beta i386. Crash in compiz.real after a first unsuccessful

I have been able to solve the problem, thanks to an Ubuntu forum post.
However, it might still be a bug, since not everyone will find the
solution.
The problem was that the ATI flgrx driver failed to load with kernel
-16, as of the time I originally posted this bug.
But flgrx still worked in kern
