I think it's not the case because it was being installed on a brand new
notebook. I uninstalled it and tried again around 4 times and had always the
same problem.
I had to install gutsy gibon and then upgrade to hardy, but direct installing
of hardy never worked.

This might happen if your filesystem is very fragmented. Please
uninstall, defgrament, install again and let us know whether it works
or not.
