now I feel stupid!
All is working perfectly fine, the problem was the usb hub I was using.
Connecting the webcam to another hub I had lying around solved the
problem.

By the way, xawtv -nodga -device /dev/video1 gives:
v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway
v4l2: open /dev/video1: Input/output error

sudo modprobe -r zc0301
sudo modprobe -r gspca

any news on this? Compiling the gspca drivers from here
http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html didn't work. Also, the webcam is
now alone, being video0. This didn't help.
Any ideas?
