I had similar problems with xfprint - Xubuntu 7.10 gutsy. xfprint locked up before installing a2ps package. After a2ps installation, xfprint works fine. It's clearly noted in the Xfce documentation that xfprint uses a2ps. Whoever prepared the Xubuntu install just missed it. I used the Alternate
