Same here.
In OpenOffice it's possible to sort by any column and expand the
selection. But it's easier and more intuitive in Excel. Find below steps
for clarification.
Using OpenOffice 2.4 on Ubuntu:
1. Go to menu EDIT > SELECT ALL

Do you still have this problem with openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2 in
Ubuntu 8.10?
I think this issue is fixed, when I selected A1 then hit sort it
selected the entire range of data automatically. Please let me know if
this solves your problem.
