I've updated to Intrepid Beta now. haven't had a problem since the I used
the solution posted

tried the solution in the last comment and removed all the mount options
for vfat under gconf system/storage/default_options/vfat and everything
works fine now, although is that a proper solution?
original mount_options:
[shortname=mixed,uid=,utf8,umask=077,exec,usefree]
