Pardon my not updating the bug report.
At this writing I have Ubunto 8.04, production release, installed on the
laptop on which I experienced the problem. The problem seems to have
gone away with the public release 8.04. All is well.

In Ubuntu 8.04 modules needed by the kernel could be missing.
See with the command "uname -r" the kernel used.
It could be for example "2.6.24-12-386" you get as answer.
Then go to the directory "cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-12-386" or putting
here the answer you got with "uname -r".
You should see
