The missing desktop icons are meant to be provided by 'nautilus-desktop'
in 18.04. So that sounds like a symptom of the regression rather than a
cause.
Since the shell clearly mostly loaded before freezing, the first thing I
recommend is to delete any local extensions:
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-s
Until this is fixed, I have reverted back to last released version in
bionic repo. I am posting another screenshot of my desktop here with the
working version of xorg so you have something to compare with. Notice
that only the desktop icons are missing on the photo I posted before
this.

Here is the output of journalctl. Also, I was unable to use `apport-
collect` because of a tls error.

After doing the same update (and no other packages), Firefox draws its
window in the wrong position on my machine (offset to the left by 36px
and to the top 32px). Thus no window decorations are visible anymore.
The mouse pointer reacts just as if the window were painted correctly.

I do not see any visible crashes. The problem is that no windows will
open for any applications and everything that was visible on the desktop
is now gone.
