Also a quick sanity check can be made by running:
grep . /sys/class/drm/*/modes
If you don't see all the display modes you expect to see for the
connected monitor then it almost certainly means a higher quality cable
is required.

Next time the problem happens, please open a Terminal window run:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
sudo apt install drm-info
sudo drm_info > drminfo.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

The reason you see a low resolution is that this was the last of many
screens that I tried.The other machine was turned off. Problem persists.
All up to date.

In Ubuntu 24.04.1 settings "Display Screen" is not working. It is
failing to change screens to something usable; and this make many pages
unusable. I'm guessing this comes from gdm gnome3? All software up to
date.
Is this a laptop or a desktop? The monitors.xml.txt above is showing
only an HP 23xi monitor connected by HDMI, but at very low resolution
and refresh rate. So assuming that's the only screen you are using, most
likely it's a poor quality HDMI connection and I would recommend getting
a higher grade
Setting to gnome-shell for now.
If possible, please run the following command from the affected system to
gather info specific to GNOME/graphics:
apport-collect 2101107
