It turned out that not only Hintstyle was ignored, but also switching between Subpixel and grayscale AA wasn't supported. Defining LCDFitler wasn't working as well. I have created a patch comprehensively addressing this issues: http://weirdfellow.wordpress.com/2010/08/01/patching-cairo. Finally
